Maureen R. Keefe, RN, PhD, FAAN, joined the University of Utah in August 2001 as the Dean of the College of Nursing. She retired from the Deanship in 2013 and is now Dean Emerita and tenured Professor. Dr. Keefe is nationally known for her research and many contributions to the area of maternal child health care. Through her academic leadership roles, she has been a spokesperson for issues affecting the profession including the status of women and worked to alleviate critical nursing and faculty shortages. She was appointed by the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services to the National Advisory Council for Nursing Education and Practice where she served as the chair of the executive committee. Dr. Keefe is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and Western Institute of Nursing. She currently co-chairs the Utah Action Coalition for Health, representing the Utah Organization of Nurse Leaders.
As the Executive Director of HealthInsight Utah, Ms. Preston provides leadership and ensures successful completion of all contract work, serves as the liaison to the Utah Board of Directors, and leads business development efforts. She currently co-chairs the Utah Action Coalition for Health. In her previous experience at HealthInsight, she has led various teams including nursing home and technical assistance. She has also developed numerous workshops and seminars for health care professionals including root cause analysis, health care quality improvement, human factors science, and resident-centered care. Ms. Preston graduated from Oregon State University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree with an emphasis in Long Term Care and minor in Business Administration. In 2003, she obtained her Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah with an emphasis in Health Policy. She also earned membership into the University of Utah chapter of the esteemed Pi Alpha Alpha (PAA) National Honors Society.
Joan M. Gallegos works as a Project Coordinator for Healthinsight. Her responsibilities include directing the work of the Utah Action Coalition for Health, managing the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to implement nurse residency programs in Utah, and conducting quality improvement for the Ryan White Part B HIV/AIDS Program. Ms. Gallegos is a registered nurse and a certified social worker. She received her bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Michigan in 1977, graduating magna cum laude. In 1982, Ms. Gallegos received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Utah, graduating with honors. She has over 35 years of professional work experience in nursing, public policy, management, and advocacy. Most notable was her appointment by Utah Governor Michael Leavitt to serve as the Utah State Medicaid Director in the mid-1990s.
